At Hebridean Marine Acoustic Research, we conduct research using passive acoustic monitoring to record cetacean and fish species

We have compiled a list of cetacean signature whistles to identify and track returning individuals and group associations. A dictionary of cetacean whistles has been built alongside this and are working on the use of channel characterisation to track exchanges between individuals

Herring visit the Bays of Harris in the late January spawning window and again in June and July. Local knowledge of traditional fishing practises in The Bays provides a foundation for seasonal surveys. This is done using echo sounders supported by sampling and acoustic monitoring. We are working to enhance detection of herring FRT on our passive acoustic monitoring equipment.
