Hydrophone array - Cliuthar

  • We have installed a pair of hydrophones (red) in Loch Cliuthar and Loch  Ghreosabhagh  in the Bays of Harris. The hydrophones are solar powered to enable the continous recording and uploading of data to our cloud servers.
  •  The hydrophones are located close inshore in areas where herring and mackerel shoal during the year. We are working to detect the presence of shoaling herring during the January spawning period and also in July when they return. Cetacean vocalisations, most commonly short beaked common dolphin and minke whales, are also detected and analysed
  • A webcam (green) is located at the head of Loch Cliuthar and is available as a livestream daily on our Twitch and Youtube accounts

Hydrophones

Our passive acoustic monitoring devices are designed and assembled in house, based around the Aquarian H2d hydrophone. We use off the shelf hardware to provide a low cost and robust installation which is configured to sample at either 96HHz or 48KHz with 24 bit resolution.

WEBCAM

The webcam is live broadcast daily from 12pm to 1pm on our Twitch and Youtube accounts (via icons below) with saved recordings also available from the previous day. It is very occasionally possible to see cetaceans if the sea state is calm.
